Trent Inman, CGCS at Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fl had a two hole fairway renovation slated for the summer.  He was worried with the sandy soils and a tight timeline he would not get full coverage of his Celebration Bermuda Grass in time for winter play. Steve Hritsko of Ducor suggested using a DAKOTA Economy Mix to help retain the needed nutrient and moisture to receive a successful renovation.

Trent decided to use the DAKOTA Economy Mix on one fairway and a light, sandy topdressing on the other.  After 75 days the Economy Mix fairway had very close to 100% coverage and was at desired density and fairway cut height.  The other fairway was at about 90% coverage getting close to desired density.  The overall maturity was about two weeks different from each other.

The DAKOTA Economy Mix was a success and Trent looks forward to using it in future renovation plans.

Fall is a great time for applying DAKOTA SPE

PictureTopdressing with a DAKOTA Mix can give the turf manager numerous agronomic benefits
Fall is a great time for applying DAKOTA Soil & Plant Enhancer in almost every growing situation.  Your turf, plants and soil will love you for it.

In Northern Regions, when DAKOTA is applied after turf aeration, it will help protect the plants vital root mass from winter desiccation.  It will also assist in driving the root mass deeper for added winter protection.  It will also assist in keeping snow mold fungicide treatment where they need to be and also decrease volitization and leaching of such products.  DAKOTA will enhance your success when spring rolls around.

In Southern Regions, DAKOTA will assist overseeders with initial seed protection and increase germination rates. It will make sure you have correct moisture and nutrient contact with the seeds to get them going with increased density and maturity when winter play increases.

In Southern Regions where painting turf programs are in place DAKOTA can act as an anti-desiccation, nutrient enhancing, and pro-biotic assistant.  Even though the plant is dormant it still is susceptible to winter desiccation and spring turf loss.  DAKOTA can maintain a more balanced water management regimen to assist the turf to be ready for spring green-up.  The nutrient loss in winter can be avoided by having DAKOTA applied. The nutrient retention ability of DAKOTA can give the turf a healthy jump start in spring.  The ability of DAKOTA to be pro-biotic can let beneficial biology have a safe home during dormancy and great place to populate when soil temperatures warm up.

With all these benefits from a little DAKOTA in your turf program, it should be easy to see why DAKOTA Soil & Plant enhancer is so important in your fall program.

DAKOTA Enhancing Green Performance at Shell Landing GC,  Over 30% Water Savings

1/18/2013

January, 2013

The sand specs for building California style greens weren’t exactly followed during construction of the Shell Landing Golf Course at Gautier, Miss., in 1999 and 2000.

That diversion led to as Toby Thornton, who became golf course superintendent in mid 2010, notes a lot of problems in holding moisture and with nutrients that were flushing straight through.

“They had been putting massive amounts of water on the greens before I got here (about 2 ½ years ago) and hadn’t been able to hold anything in the root zone,” Thornton says. During his first summer at Shell Landing, the greens were hand-watered. This made them a little bit better but certainly not anywhere good enough.

“I didn’t have a lot of information to go by and was trying to do some new things,” he says of the first summer. “I mean I  tried everything.”

Finally after not being able to develop the greens that he wanted, it became obvious to Thornton that the profile of the greens had to change. With that determination, he then worked with AGROMAX, a producer of custom aggregates and a distributor of DAKOTA™, fertilizers and chemicals for the golf and sports turf industries in the Central Gulf Coast. They developed a topdressing that would promote retention of both moisture and nutrients, while adding an organic

fertilizer.

“Toby wanted better moisture control and nutrient retention in the root zone of the California style greens,” Jeff

Cornelson of AGROMAX says. “Those greens were leaching and drying out too rapidly. After a couple of topdressing

applications, Toby has turned some troubled greens into some that are much easier to manage and maintain. They are becoming some of the best in my four-state service region.”

Blended at AGROMAX’s plant in Foley and shipped to Shell Landing, the topdressing featured 20 percent DAKOTA™

Organic Soil & Plant Enhancer in the sand to improve the water and nutrient relationship in the root zone. In the blend, too, was an appropriate amount of the organic fertilizer SUSTANE©.

“I really worked the material down in those greens,” Thornton says. “Since then, we’ve really turned the corner on how much we’ve had to water and how we’ve been able to hold the nutrients. I’m not totally out of the woods yet but I have definitely started to change the profile of the greens. The roots have gotten a lot better and we’ve been able to reduce our water usage by about a third.

“We have all around better playability. I’m really happy with what we’ve been able to do,” he says of the 18-hole

championship golf course that was designed by Davis Love III and is located on waterfront of the Gulf of Mexico. “We’ve been very aggressive. Most of it we are doing 80-20, but when I went and did some of it by hand, I was even doing it at 65-35.” More work is planned in spring 2013, Thornton says. “DAKOTA™ has really helped us out.”

Pittsburgh Parks Enhanced with DAKOTA

Dura Edge Natural Sand Co.
Grant McKnight
Slippery Rock, PA

When the restoration of the grass and flower beds in one of the larger, most used parks in Pittsburgh became necessary a few years ago, Phillip Gruszka, director of management and maintenance for Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, began by seeking out the best horticultural information available.

That information came from multiple sources… from landscape architects, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Penn State Extension, and from turf specialists and agronomists at the local universities. It included, of course, recommendations about the make-up of the soil.

With that technical information in hand, Gruszka visited with Grant McKnight at Dura Edge Natural Sand Co. in Slippery Rock, PA. A highly respected supplier of premiere sand and soil products, Dura Edge Natural Sand provides topdressings and root zone mixes for some of the top collegiate and professional level baseball fields in the country. To develop that right mix for a particular situation, McKnight has worked with the lab personnel at DAKOTA Analytical, Inc. in creating the right soil amendment blend.

DAKOTA Soil & Plant Enhancer was chosen as the soil amendment and the results of the restoration effort were tremendous. “We are now seven years into our first use of DAKOTA,” Gruszka says. “It is performing very well. We’re very pleased with what DAKOTA does for us.

”McKnight notes, “What sold me on DAKOTA — and I tell my customer base this whenever I’m building something — is that with DAKOTA you are contributing nitrogen to the mix. With sphagnum peat or another type of organic material, that material is still breaking down and, in the process, will essentially pull nitrogen out of the mix. I try to get people to understand the value of the organic that DAKOTA provides as opposed to the other products.

“The root zone garden mixes that we’ve made for Phil have performed consistently year after year,” McKnight says of the blends that have ranged from 7 to 15 percent DAKOTA in the appropriate sand.
When restoring landscapes in the 1,700 acres of the Pittsburgh parks that he oversees, Gruszka considers both the cost of the investment and what it will take to maintain that park into the future. “We try to determine the most sustainable practices that we can use to get both the best immediate result and to keep the future cost of maintenance in line,” Gruszka says.

“I’m now doing my fifth park restoration project with DAKOTA in the mix. I get challenged regularly by a number of good firms that produce compost and want that to be a part of our mixes. I don’t have any opposition to working with compost on a site where the aesthetics can be less than premiere but when I am on a high-end park landscape, I don’t want any variabilities. I want the products going into the mix to be known and be known over time. There are sites where composts could work for me but I’m not going to use it where I need to have dependable performance year in and year out. We don’t want to have to restore a particular park amenity again.”

Considered in the restoration process, he says, are the type of activities that will be staged in that particular area. Should that be an activity such as concerts and other events that attract a lot of foot traffic, the landscape must be able to stand up to greater than normal use. In that case, the landscape has to be very resilient, he says. “I have to have tough plants and a soil content that is going to allow the grass to withstand the heavy amount of traffic that the site will receive. We want to use the very best products that we can afford.”
